I could play volleyball every day till the day I die, and still not get enough. I love it. Plus, we had burgers, great music, American and Venezuelan employees alike calling plays to each other and having a great time, and we were playing on the grass right outside the embassy. Let me explain why this location was so wonderful.
The vista was incredible. It looked something like this (but not exactly, since I didn't have my camera with me today):
Then in the foreground, a giant American flag was blowing in the breeze, and I thought to myself: "Wow. I work at an American Embassy." It's totally crazy, how did I get here? I am LOVING it, I feel so lucky. Then, of course, I went out to eat tonight with a couple of friends, and then went to the grocery store, and kept getting snubbed by some local Venezuelans. The lady at the cash register, the waiter, the lady walking down aisle 5.....sometimes here I feel like no matter how nice I try to be or how much I smile at people, I get NOTHING back. Sigh. But then, as I was buying my one loaf of bread at the super-fancy-pasteleria-for-rich-people-shop-with-the-pyramid-bigger-than-me-made-up-of-wicked-expensive-ferrero-chocolates, the Venezuelan guy ringing me up asked me how I was doing. I looked up at him, smiled and said "OK. How are you doing?" He answered some witty response, (uninteligible to me, of course, because I can't understand anyone here). And then, to my surprise, he looked at me, said with a smile "You are too skinny, here, eat this." And handed me a ferrero chocolate. It totally made my day!!! I almost cried. Almost.
