State Hopping

Well, after this weekend (I'm traveling for work again), I will have been to all of the states you see below in RED. Thursday I'm hitting Vermont, and Friday I'm hitting New Hampshire and Maine. Sweet! The only problem is.....

Can anyone see that speck of white in the middle of my beautifully RED East Coast? That would be Rhode Island. It is now the next state on my list that I am determined to conquer. I just can't figure out why I should go there, other than being able to color it in. Any suggestions? What's kickin' in R.I.? And WHY is it called Rhode Island?

Rhode Island, officially named the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, is a state in the New England region of the United States. It is the smallest U.S. state by area.

The state is called Rhode Island in common usage, often leading to confusion, as most of the state lies on the North American mainland. Providence Plantations refers to the mainland, while Rhode Island is actually the official name for Aquidneck Island (now composed of the city of Newport, and the towns of Middletown and Portsmouth).

Here are some exciting things to do or see in Rhode Island:

The First Baptist Church in America, founded by Roger Williams in 1638.
The seaside city of Newport is home to many famous mansions, including The Breakers, Marble House and Belcourt Castle.
The state capitol building is made of white Georgian marble. On top is the world's fourth largest self-supported marble dome. It houses the Rhode Island Charter of 1663 and other state treasures.
Watch Hill has the nation’s oldest carousel that has been in continuous operation since 1850.
If baseball is your thing, you can catch a game played by the Pawtucket Red Sox, Boston's AAA farm team, or the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

"Visit Rhode Island...and Unwind!"
and "If you haven't seen Rhode Island, you haven't seen New England!"
